Are You Ready for the Big Burn?

Yellboy | June 5, 2009

There is growing concern among healthcare professionals that there is about to be an explosion in the number of cases of serious skin cancer in the United Kingdom.

Figures published by Cancer Research UK present a worrying trend that shows how the fashion for tans in the 70’s and 80’s is now resulting in a high number of skin cancer cases.

Advice, like staying out of the midday sun, is often hard to heed. Who wants to sit indoors when the sun is shining? And with the long range forecast suggesting that this could be a particularly hot summer there is need for some realistic advice that will keep people safe while allowing them to enjoy the outdoors.

Women are advised to use beauty products that already contain an effective sun screen. And men are advised to use moisturisers or sun protection on their faces, necks and any exposed areas of skin. It is also a good idea to wear light, but long sleeved shirts and tops along with hats that have a wide brim. And if you must go outdoors during the peak hours try and stay in the shade.

If you look after children it is particularly important to ensure that you apply some effective sun protection, ideally factor 16 or higher, and then reapply several times during the day as it will wear off.

Try and stay safe this summer so that you can enjoy many more summers to come.
